Our series on the Pennsy’s move from steam to diesel now moves to Ohio. Don Krofta again provides the crisp 16mm film that takes us back decades. The featured line is the Columbus to Sandusky coal-hauling route with J1 class steam engines and, believe it or not, big Santa Fe locomotive – their 2-10-4 Texas types. The Pennsylvania Railroad was short on power, especially big power for hauling coal, and so leased these 12 Santa Fe engines in 1956.

You’ll see these giant locos on coal runs at many locations including the coal dock at Harvey, Ohio. We also see trains on the Toledo Division and the busy east-west mainline. And we experience the transition from steam to diesel power with J-1’s, H-9’s, I-1’s handing over their jobs to new diesels from EMD, ALCO, BALDWIN and GE. We’re on the scene from 1954 to 1969, on the Pennsylvania and Penn Central. Color and B&W film with authentic PRR sound.
