Steam & Diesel on the NKP, Volume 3

Nickel Plate’s fleet of Berkshires included 26 they inherited from the Wheeling & Lake Erie when the NKP took over the W&LE in 1949. The 2-8-4 Lima-built Berkshires were a perfect fit for the NKP. The W&LE Berks were built by ALCo. Numbered in the 800 series and with some design quirks, you could tell a W&LE Berk if you knew what to look for…and Don Krofta knew.

While everyone else trained their lens’ on the famous 700 series Berkshires the NKP ran (two run yet today), no one looked at the former W&LE Berks the NKP ran in Northern Ohio. In fact none were saved and so this film record is all we have. With added footage of NKP steam plus the return of NKP 759 in 1968 and 1969, this is a Nickel Plate Road steam lover’s Christmas!
