Like with “Daylight Express,” I’ve had a VHS copy of this film and decided to do a mix of old and new by getting it on DVD. I did have another DVD copy of it before getting it on VHS, but it got ruined. Once again, Jim Mitchell and the Skyfire team film Southern Pacific Daylight 4449 on its 1997 excursion from its homebase of Portland, Oregon to Yakima, Washington. It begins its run by running east through the Columbia River Gorge, then turned northwest running along the Yakima River. Following an overnight stay in Yakima, the Daylight traveled over the newly reopened Stampede Pass with 2 diesel helpers that assisted from Ellensburg to Auburn, where they disconnected and the Daylight returned by running along the scenic Puget Sound. From what I hear, Skyfire did a third film on 4449, which still hadn’t been released after all these years. It was going to be titled, “Freedom Train Up The Deschutes River,” covering the Daylight’s March, 2002 excursion to Bend, Oregon when it was repainted in its Red, White, and Blue scheme while pulling the American Freedom Train during our nation’s bicentennial to honor the victims of 9/11.

Once again, MAJOR kudos to Skyfire for this one as well (besides their first SP 4449 program). Just like numerous others on here, I too enjoyed this on VHS as a kid back in the late 90s.

I originally had this program on VHS as kid and was pleasantly surprised to learn Skyfire returned to Portland for another program on 4449.
As the SP had been bought out by Union Pacific by this time, the famous “Daylight” engine travels along the BNSF mainline through the Columbia River Gorge to Yakima and back via Stampede Pass. Multi-camera coverage (including helicopter and mini-cam views from the engine) make for some interesting views and the sound (both from the engine and the accompanying music soundtrack) is absolutely wonderful!
As a sequel to “Daylight Express”, this video is a must-have for any fan of 4449.

In this sequel to Daylight Express, there are preparations at the since demolished Brooklyn yard roundhouse as well as some flashback footage from Daylight Express, not to mention some interviews with the Daylight crew: Jack Wheelihan, William Stetler, Woodrow Riggs, & of course Engineer Doyle McCormick. Throughout June of 1997, 4449 operated on a 2 day circle trip for the re-opening of the stampede pass line, and also through the Yakima river canyon in Washington state. One scene shows a dog racing across the bridge to avoid getting hit by the red & orange 4-8-4. Thankfully, the 4 legged animal is safe at last.
