Big steam locomotive power ventured onto the high iron during the summer of 1998, and Pentrex was on the spot to capture the excitement. Our adventure begins with Milwaukee Road 261. This shiny black beauty led an excursion on the Twin Cities & Western in Minnesota, ran on the BNSF mainline from Chicago to Galesburg, and teamed up with Algoma Central F-units on the Wisconsin Central out of Green Bay.
Then we climb into the cab of Nickel Plate 587 for a ride through the Indiana countryside and chase SP Daylight 4449 from Portland to Bend, Oregon. The scenic wonders of the Columbia River Gorge and Deschutes River Canyon are perfect backdrops to Daylight’s billowing clouds of steam and smoke and classic good looks.
Pentrex was there when Union Pacific 844, joined by Centennial diesel 6936, journeyed from Denver, Colorado to Cheyenne, Wyoming for UP’s only public excursion of the year. And we attended “Steamfest in the Valley” at Osceola, Wisconsin where the year’s most thrilling event took place – a steam tripleheader featuring Northern Pacific 328, Soo Line 2719 and Soo Line 1003!

Who can pass up all these great steamers on one video? A great addition to your collection, you won’t be disappointed.

Absolutely unprecedented coverage of ALL these fine steamers in their prime… There is definitely something for everyone here when it comes to both mainline and tourist action. You will love hearing Milwaukee Road #261’s whistle action as she pulled her excursions. The SP #4449 trip was quite picturesque as well. You will also see UP #844 pull the 1998 Cheyenne Frontier Days Train in grand fashion.
One highlight I really enjoyed is the coverage of Nickel Plate 587’s runs from Noblesville to Fishers and return. I used to live in Fishers up until 2009 when our family moved from Indiana to Maryland. I was only 4 years old in 1998. Watching Pentrex’s quality footage of the 587 brought back SO many wonderful memories of the Indiana Transportation Museum from when I was a little boy. A lot of areas around Indianapolis, including Fishers, look TOTALLY different now (in 2022) than they did back in the late 90s and early 2000s when I was growing up there… I hope YOU will also treasure this beautiful trip down “memory lane” to a much simpler time on the Hoosier Heritage Port Authority’s right of way (which ran from Indianapolis to Tipton)… This original Peru and Indianapolis Railroad line is now completely defunct, and is being turned into the Nickel Plate Trail. The quaintness and simplicity of how downtown Fishers used to be is clearly shown along with our beloved Mikado doing what she did best. Don’t miss it!
Another nice highlight is OF COURSE the TRIPLEHEADER of 328, 2719, and 1003… a VERY rare treat indeed… This entire program is a “MUST HAVE” for ANY railfan’s (or just plain steam fan’s) video collection.

Steam operating in 1998 is truly a must have in your collection. The sounds NKP 587 were music to my ears.

This program shows all the amazing action that took place in 1998, such as the Milwaukee Road 261 performing excursions on three separate occasions, the 844 pulling Union Pacific’s only public excursion of the year, and the tripleheader by Northern Pacific 328, SOO Line 2719 and 1003.

I used to volunteer for the Indiana Transportation Museum between 2011 and 2017, but I never gotten to see the 587 in action. Still love the other steamers though.

I enjoyed the opportunity to see an assortment of mid-western steam locomotives! I liked seeing Nickel Plate 587, which I don’t believe has been steamed in years. Really liked seeing the triple header with Norther Pacific 328, Soo Line 2719, and Soo Line 1003.

a decent presentation of some great old time locos. Steam excursion at it’s finest in various locations. The triple header in steam was fun to watch. A good video. I recommend it for the railfans who really enjoy their steam trains.
