Step back to 1991 to experience one of the busiest and most scenic railroad routes in Northern California, the Shasta Division of the Southern Pacific. The Valley and Black Butte Districts host a daily parade of heavy lumber and merchandise trains, joined by an ever-increasing number of intermodal movements.

Our coverage of this exciting area starts in Redding and continues to Grass Lake. Trains cross the dramatic Redding Trestle as they start upgrade into the mountains. The constantly twisting route follows the Sacramento River to Dunsmuir where diesels are added to many of the trains for the battle through Cantara Loop and up the stiff 2.1 percent grade through Azalea. Continuing east from Black Butte, trains climb a constant 1.4 percent grade as they skirt their way around the base of Mt. Shasta.

On the Shasta Division, Southern Pacific’s trains work their way through changing and spectacular scenery. You’ll experience the challenges they face as they cross high trestles and grind uphill to the summit at Grass Lake. You’ll witness the seasons change from summer’s long days to winter’s snow-covered slopes, as the trains keep moving. Interesting motive power, varied and plentiful trains, and the difficulties of mountain railroading await you in Southern Pacific’s Shasta Division!

If you like mountain railroading, tunnel motors in notch 8 and amazing scenery this DVD is for you. I almost want to say this might be the BEST SP DVD out there. I really enjoyed it.

  2. Curtis Watson

The old Espee ran through some of the most spectacular scenery in America, and the Shasta route is no exception, though it is exceptionally beautiful. Lots of good action at lots of great locations. Fans of the SP will want to have this one!

A great look at gritty modern-day railroading when it was released in 1991, this program is now a nice glimpse into an era that will never be duplicated. The Southern Pacific was alive and well when this video was shot, and even the train consists were different — intermodal trains were gaining popularity, but manifest freights still made up much of the traffic. The camerawork is very well done and the scenery is breathtaking, with steep grades, challenging curves, changing seasons, and Mount Shasta as a spectacular backdrop! One of the best in Pentrex’ very fine collection of Southern Pacific videos.

With a great variety of diesels, this program covers the northbound journey from Redding to dunsmuir with a great variety of trestles, bridges, mountains & tunnels. Keep in mind that this program was recorded during production of the best of 1990.

Mountain railroading is always a challenge. A great video for just that to see with the steep grades and long heavy trains. And the scenery is awesome to see. Rail fans in general will love this one as Southern Pacific puts on a great show.
