This is now Union Pacific country – but in 1996, it was the home to mostly older SP diesels and ancient semaphores. It was just after the merger, but most of the traffic is still headed up by Southern Pacific workhorses. And the line between El Paso and Tucumcari is filled with Style B Lower Quadrant Semaphores. These signals were at least 60 years old, but still did their job protecting trains as they roared through the New Mexico sagebrush. See several sets of blades in the Coyote, Carrizozo and Polly area, clanking up and down with the passage of the trains.

  1. Dan

Operating semaphores, locomotives wearing Southern Pacific paint and the ruggedly beautiful scenery of New Mexico; it’s “can’t miss” combination, and this program showcases all of them beautifully. The video is creatively shot and edited, and you’ll get more than just a passing glimpse at the semaphores. Great railroading and a healthy dose of nostalgia make this a “must have” program. Well done, Highball!
