Every type of engine on SP tracks is represented, from monster articulateds and cab-forwards pounding drag freight up mountain grades to tiny switchers bustling about the Bayshore yards. Steam engines power over the deserts of New Mexico to the forests of Oregon. Northerns scream by, pulling bright orange Daylights across the floor of California’s Central Valley.
Passenger traffic hustles in and out of San Francisco’s busy downtown terminal. A vintage diamond-stacked locomotive makes an appearance, restored and in action.
NOTE: This 2016 release updates and replaces Sunday River’s “Southern Pacific Steam 1890-1960” with new organization and narration, and improved picture quality and sound.

There are a variety of films shot by Mr. Johnathan F. Kirkland on this fallen flag road name that had since been purchased by Union Pacific in 1996 at locations like San Francisco with the Railroad’s HQ building & a ride on ferry boats, West Oakland Pier with the roundhouse (look carefully for the rear of the tender from future famous survivor 4-6-2 2467 that had since been put on display at the California State Railroad Museum in Old Sacramento), Bayshore, Mission bay roundhouse with the GS class 4-8-4s, 4-6-2s, & 4-8-2s, Girffith Park in Downtown Los Angeles with Atlantic 3025 on display near the Universal & Warner Brothers Movie Studios, Taylor Yard which was used for the filming of the 1986 movie with 4449: Tough Guys, the San Leandro Branch, Alameda Island, Madera, the Los Gatos Branch, the Calaveras line, Fruitvalle, Dorris, Pioneer Park in Bakersfield with 1890 built 4-8-0 2914 on display, Santa Clara, the Los Banos Line, Altamont Pass, Tracy, Turlock, Merced, Stockton, Chowchilla, Almagordo NM, Carrizozo NM, McArthur, the Alturus line at Red Bluff, Garnet, Beaumont Hill, & Portland OR with 4-10-2 5021 on the final steam powered freight movement in the Northwest that is thankfully on display at the Rail Giants Museum in Pomona.
At San Francisco, 1896 built 4-6-0 number 2248 is seen pulling the Centennial. Thankfully, this 10-wheeler is now at the Grapevine Vintage Railroad in Texas.
