Southern Pacific Class GS-4 #4449 stars in this expanded DVD presentation. The famous red, orange, and black 4-8-4 makes a run to LA for the Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal celebration. First we see the engine in Portland at the roundhouse and turning on the turntable prior to the run. Then we follow 4449 and a short train for two days from Portland to Klamath Falls, and then on to Oakland. Highlights are scenes in the Cascades, and a morning-time look at 4449 with one of the best reflection shots in the water we have ever made. At Oakland more cars are added for the excursion to Santa Barbara, where we see some nice scenes along the Pacific at Surf, California. The last day 4449 runs to Los Angeles, capped by a side-by-side performance next to Union Pacific 4-8-4 #8444 entering LA Union Station.

Next we see the display diesels at the depot, and the departure of both trains up Cajon Pass as they storm the grade side-by-side once more as throngs of spectators watch the event. Then we follow 4449 to Bakersfield, and the last day on to Fresno. There is a nice cab ride from Black Butte to Dunsmuir (at 60 MPH!), and some good pacing scenes north of Bakersfield to make this an action-packed video of one of the most famous engines in the United States. Just for the DVD, the in-cab scenes have been lengthened!

Another Greg Scholl masterpiece… GREAT action of her on home rails, especially through the gorgeous Cascade Mountains.

Southern Pacific Daylight 4449 has always been my favorite locomotive since I was a kid and this video shows portions of the Daylight traveling from it’s home base in Portland, Oregon to Los Angeles, California for the 50th anniversary of the Union Station in L.A. Union Pacific 8444 would also be the star of the celebration and both locomotives were lined up side-by-side as they arrived in L.A. A few days later, the two locomotives battle the grades of Cajon Pass and both put on a show for the fans. Unfortunately, the duel was cut short when the Daylight overheated her bearings and had to stop to let them cool. Later, it traveled to Fresno, Bakersfield, Sacramento and eventually back home to Portland. This 1989 trip would not only be the last time that the 4449 traveled to Los Angeles as it is now own by Union Pacific, but it was also the last time that the Union Pacific engine would carry the extra 4 digit before the GP30 diesel 844 retired from active service and the steam locomotive would once again reclaim her original number; 844. RFD-TV was one of the reasons I bought this video and it was a great one but I wish they would show more of the side-by-side runby on California’s Cajon Pass.

Great tape on the 4449 at the LAUPT anniversary, and on a train in Washington State and Oregon. Great pacing scenes abound and a cab ride or two as well. Still don’t understand the second whistle though.

  4. Ricky

Well for those of you who don’t know this item, it has lots of wrong color filters throughout the original 1989 tape. 17 Years later, its re-edited with new scenes, new narrative dialogue, Corrected color footages, and still no reason why 4449 wore 2 whistles.
