Pay a visit to Nevada and western Utah and the mainline of the former Western Pacific over Silver Zone Pass. Today it’s the Union Pacific’s Shafter Subdivision and in this program you’ll enjoy seeing trains running from the Great Salt Lake in Utah, west to Winnemucca, Nevada. Along the way trains pass through the salt flats east of Wendover, then climb over Silver Zone Pass including famous Arnold Loop. The railroad continues west, passing the ghost town of Shafter, passing through Hogan Tunnel, and snaking through beautiful Palisade Canyon. You’ll see great contemporary diesel action in a beautiful western setting, and Amtrak’s California Zephyr gives us a cameo! Chapter Menu provides instant access to program segments. Watch the program with or without narration.

This 2010 RP title covers tons of great diesel action in the west on Union Pacific with Heritage Unit 1983 in a couple of scenes, Kansas City Southern, Norfolk Southern, Santa Fe, & even Amtrak’s California Zephyr, plus BNSF at locations like Salt Lake City, Marblehead deep in the Cricket Mountains, Knolls, the Bonneville Salt Flats, Wendover at the State Line in the night, Cliffside at Arnold Loop, the Summit of the pass at milepost 772 which is also at an elevation of 5875 feet above sea level not to mention meets at night near the end of the show, Shafter at the once connection to the Nevada Northern, Hogan Tunnel in the Piqua Mountains, Independence Valley at Tobar, route 32 crossing, Alazon, Halleck, the Humbolt River, Elko with Western Pacific GP9 number 727 on display, the Carlin Tunnels, the Palisade Canyon with bridges & tunnels, Beowawe, Battle Mountain, & Weso.

It is likely that this program was made during production of another RP title: Utah’s Incredible Soldier Summit.

All in all, the late Lane Venardos did a marvelous job narrating this Program.

Railway Productions does a nice job capturing the vastness of the terrain and the challenges the landscape poses for trains and their crews. The videography is very well done, with a nice combination of trackside shots and panoramic views to showcase long, heavy trains in an often harsh setting. And Palisade Canyon is spectacular! A fine addition to any collection.

An interesting part of the country to see. While a very desolate region, the scenery is worth seeing. Lots of great train action pulling heary weights which include coal and long manifests. Also the Amtrak makes an appearance. Very enjoyable video to watch. Maybe could have been a tad longer, but ok for the price.

  4. T.A.R.

COME ALONG ON A FANTASTIC ADVENTURE ON THE SILVER ZONE PASS. SEE THE GREAT SALT LAKE IN UTAH, CLIMB OVER SILVER ZONE PASS, SEE ARNOLD LOOP, PASS THROUGH THE HOGAN TUNNEL AND GO THROUGH THE BEAUTIFUL PALISADE CANYON. YOU EVEN GET TO SEE THE CALIFORNIA ZEPHYR PASS YOU BY IN ALL HER GLORY. GREAT SCENERY, LOTS OF IN YOUR FACE ACTION AND WITH OR WITHOUT NARRATION. 4 STARS AND 70 MINUTES LONG.
