Meet the Shay, the most popular steam locomotive on North America’s rugged logging railroads. They could climb and take tight curves and uneven track. Just what a logging operation needs. And, for us railfans, they are fun to watch! Highly entertaining and informative. Discover the geared-locomotive design that “won the woods.” Includes the famous Shay Races from Railfair Sacramento…at death-defying speeds of over 18 mph! (You had to be there to understand…or the next-best thing.)

The story is told with amazing modern, color video, and Dolby Surround Sound, along with rare historic color film.

BONUS: A Day in a Shay featurette. Join a Shay locomotive crew for a full-day cab ride as they retrieve loaded log cars from the woods.

Made in 1999 to Coincide with the California State Railroad Museum’s Railfair ’99 from June 18-27, this half hour program chronicles Mt. Emily Lumber Company Shay Number 1 built in Lima Ohio in September of 1923 on a log train, with light running scenes, & a passenger train with former Milwaukee Road coaches in Oregon, & of Course in California having a race with Graham County Railroad Company Number 1925 that has travelled on a westbound Transcontinental trip from the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer also on a flatbed.

There is also an interview with Martin Hansen from the Shay’s cab inside & outside, as well as track crew supervisor Roy Hill, not to mention some historic Black & White still images, plus a cab ride.

Did you know at one time, the shay once traveled all the way east to West Virginia’s Cass Scenic Railroad as number 3? Well in one scene, the Shay Tripleheads with other Shays at Cass: 4 & 2 as it was photographed by Carl Franz.

The engine resides at the City of Prineville Railway which interchanges with BNSF Oregon Trunk Subdivision as evidenced by some rebuilt diesels in the storage sheds, although it is owned by the Oregon Historical Society.
