This is modern Santa Fe power against a panorama of the Old West and historic railroad names: Raton Pass, the Las Vegas Sub and Glorieta Pass. They’re all here, plus the Kansas City-El Paso quality service fast freight…and the La Junta-Los Angeles freight in action over this historic and scenic Southwestern U.S. line. You’ll wish you were on board as Amtrak’s Southwest Limited, successor to the Super Chief, climbs Raton Pass and flashes across the high plains of New Mexico.

The red and silver F 45 War Bonnets are seen in powerful trackside views and exciting pacing sequences. The merger “Kodachrome” paint scheme is still in evidence also. Long coal drags rumble over the Colorado & Wyoming’s Allen Mine Branch. Videotaped 1989, 1990 and 1991. Narrated by Rege Cordic.

4 reviews for Santa Fe’s Raton Pass

  1. Curtis Watson

Great footage in incredible scenery. From coal trains to Amtrak’s Southwest Chief, to grinding up-grade towards Raton Summit, this is a fantastic program about Santa Fe’s famous mountain line. It would make an excellent addition to anyone’s collection.

  2. Mwdonoughue

This program offers a glimpse at the Raton Route, when Santa Fe freights and Amtrak’s Southwest Chief still plied the rails.

  3. Dan

This is a railfan’s time machine … still-vibrant Santa Fe colors set against the rugged backdrop of Raton. The video quality in this program is very good, especially considering that it was shot thirty years ago. There’s just the right amount of narration to add to your understanding of railroad operations and the area covered … and it’s always fun to catch a glimpse of the short-lived Kodachrome paint scheme! A great look back at images that will never be repeated, and a nice addition to any collection.

  4. Jean Pierre Duchesneau

A very good program of a line not used in freight operation anymore
Nice to see those beautiful F45 War Bonnets
This DVD is one of the best from WB and for me the price is correct
