Santa Fe’s Clovis and Gallup Subs exist in a land of red rock bluffs, windswept mesas, and rugged canyons where Super Fleet diesels in red and silver Warbonnet paint lead high-priority intermodal trains and drag freights in unending numbers. Pentrex captured the beauty of New Mexico railroading Santa Fe style in 1994 prior to the merger with BN. These stunning images were taken during early mornings and late afternoons when long shadows and pastel hues enriched the southwestern landscapes and the trains glowed in vivid detail.
Originally released as two separate programs, Volumes I and II have now been combined on one DVD, bringing you the full story of Santa Fe’s New Mexico mainline in three hours of nonstop action. Featured are:
Volume I – The Clovis Subdivision
The stretch of mainline known as the Clovis Sub runs through the confines of Abo Canyon, a five-and-a-half mile passage with seven bridges and rugged outcroppings. Follow hot priority intermodals and drag freights west from Texas to Belen as red and silver Warbonnets work the line. (90 minutes)
Volume II – The Gallup Subdivision
Westbound trains climb the steep grade out of Belen on their way to the major junction of Dalies before heading west across the Continental Divide to the Arizona border. It’s 180 miles of heavy-duty railroading where Santa Fe’s engines, facing extreme weather conditions and rugged landscapes, are put to the test. (90 minutes)

This program spans the entirety of the Santa Fe’s main line through New Mexico over two subdivisions, the Clovis Sub and the Gallup Sub, working from east to west. Trains seen are identified by their symbols. Many include B-Units, rare in later years of railroading. We visit classic ATSF depots and Harvey Houses and pass through Abo Canyon. Terrain varies from flatlands and grasslands to rugged vast deserts and beautiful red sandstone bluffs. Lost of industry is shown, including grain hoppers, intermodal yards, and a coal-fired power plant. Some interesting mishaps are caught on camera such as loose roof panels and brakes that have slipped on. This is a fun look at an awesome railroad, and a worthwhile addition to anyone’s collection.

These 2 videos of Santa Fe are very, very enjoyable. Pentrex shot great coverage of both lines. Including Abo Canyon which is now off limits. Multiple trains from many different angles are seen from the cliffs and right by the bridges. Nice little graphics they did with the train symbols and more. Great audio and tripod mounted coverage. Yet another enjoyable set of programs worth the money to get.

With only a few years to the end of the Santa Fe, the railroad puts on a great show through some very rugged conditions. Lots of heavy long movements with the power working hard. For the scenery lovers…. there is lots here for your enjoyment.

This video was the first video I ever watched on Pentrex as a young kid. It’s a great video to experience and I visited Gallup, New Mexico earlier this year. Santa Fe railroad will go down as one of the most beloved railroads in America. Pentrex has the best coverage like no other could duplicate it.
