This is BNSF’s Sand Hills Subdivision of the Powder River Division. The sub runs east from Alliance, Nebraska. In March 2004, we follow the Sand Hills line from east Alliance to near Thedford – through the scenic, and namesake, Sand Hills. You’ll see lots of SD70MACs on coal trains, plus new AC44 and Dash 9 locomotives. You’ll see a couple of different BNSF paint schemes, including vintage logos and paint schemes.

Long, heavy trains working hard through a landscape that is starkly beautiful. Highball has done a nice job mixing trackside shots with panoramic views that capture a sense of how vast this area truly is. It’s the end of winter … the lighting is especially nice, and the sound of the trains reverberates through the Sand Hills as coal loads and empties are shuttled out of and into the Powder River Basin. This is the story of big time railroading, with Highball’s flair for great video storytelling.

Railroading in Nebraska… It is really something for railfans to see. This video was shot in March, so the landscape has only 2 colours, white and brown. And being the area of Nebraska that it is in, the landscape is barren. Rolling hills that are basically treeless. But do not let this discourage the interest in this video. There is a lot to see. The trains are awesome to see. Highball has done a wonderful job covering the territory and the trains that transverse it. Big power, long trains, not moving to fast. Great stuff. I was pleased with the video. A great addition for my collection being in an area that is not to heavily covered by railroad video producers.
I would like to see the same territory again, only in July. It would be a wonderful area to see also in person, and Highball has brought it to life for the railfans. Definitely a video for all railfans.
