The San Francisco Bay Area has a lot to offer when it comes to railroading! In this show, the first in a Pentrex series featuring Bay Area Rails, we will explore the South Bay using San Jose as our hub. Amtrak, Caltrain, Altamont Commuter Express (ACE), Union Pacific, BNSF, and several tourist railroads all operate here. With the number of commuter trains, freights, and locals that travel through the heart of Silicon Valley, you’ll see there really is some great railroading action here! With more than two hours of railroading on this DVD, the area’s wide variety of action is well represented!
You’ll get a chance to explore parts of UP’s Coast Subdivision, Niles Subdivision, Oakland Subdivision, Warm Springs Subdivision, and other areas. You’ll travel to Watsonville Junction and follow the Davenport and Hollister locals, which originate from here. A few side trips will bring you to the Niles Canyon Railway, the Santa Cruz, Big Trees & Pacific Railway, and the Roaring Camp & Big Trees Narrow Gauge Railroad. The variety of motive power you’ll witness on the freights include DRGW GP40-2s and the newest MP36PH-3C pulling Caltrain’s Baby Bullets.

California has a population larger than the nation of Canada, and is the 8th largest economic region in the entire world. Transportation is important, and railroads play a very large part in that.
The San Francisco Bay Area is one of the highly populated areas, and the rails are a very valuable commodity… for freight service, long distance and intercity passenger service, local commuter service, and tourism.
For the rail fan who has a desire to see all noted, this video is for You. From older freight engines (GP40’s) to the modern passengers (MP36PH’s), a very wide variety is seen. At over 2 hours, the video is long enough to cover the region well, without over doing it. A couple of local tourist railroads are also featured, including the Niles Canyon Railway which is a real treat.
