  1. Curtis Watson

Saluda–the name resonates with images of Southern’s and Norfolk Southern’s big diesels growling up the steepest mainline grade in the country, but for all their power being unable to haul their train over in less than three trips. Unfortunately, Saluda is set to become a trail now, but Delay-in-Block does a great job of showing us what remains of the railroad line here. And the NS’ training video gives us excellent information on how heavy trains were carefully taken down the hill.

In the main feature which was made by Delay in Block Productions from YouTube, Drayton Blackgrove talks about not only the history of the former mainline itself deep in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, but also lots of drone footage with music added, as well as interviews with the people who remember seeing the trains go by up until 2001 due to financial issues & even a washout: the late Jim Wrinn of Trains Magazine, David O’Brien who works as a volunteer for the Saluda Station Museum, as well as Mary Mayland, Cathy Jackson, & Judy Ward, retired driver Mr. J.T. Stanberry, Leon Morgan of the M.A. Pace general store, road foreman Rick Collins, TVRM manager Tim Andrews, Roger Fuehring of the Madison Incline, Mark Ray of Dad’s Collectibles, & even a quotation from NKP 765 engineer Rich Melvin.

There are also historic Black & White & Color Still images of steam & diesels battling through the 4% grade, as well as a clip of Southern 4501 at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum in Chattanooga, not to mention witnessing N&W 611 in October of 1992 from Bob Loehne of American AltaVista, which more scenes of the J Class Northern itself can be found on the Green Frog DVD & Blu-ray Acquisition & Conversion. Plus, there are historic maps of the mainline, as well as a 1984 flashback with High-Hood units in charge while learning to break its freight train in different parts to make the climb much easier. In 2 scenes, Drayton is on the front of 630 at the TVRM shops.

After the 2-in-1 show, there are previews of other pentrex titles: 2 shows of UP Big Boy 4014’s circle tour, the 30th anniversary of Michigan Iron Ore Trains, & 2 diesel shows filmed in Texas which was likely to be released: Amarillo: BNSF’s Panhandle Hub, & Fort Worth’s Tower 60.
