Rocky Mountain Snowplow is a fascinating look at what is perhaps the rarest event in all of railroading . . . the operation of a steam-powered Rotary Snowplow to open a snowbound railroad. It’s early May, and Colorado and New Mexico’s famous Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad is still closed with huge drifts of snow blocking the tracks for several miles! Rotary snowplow OY, along with K-36 class 2-8-2 steam locomotives 487, 488, and 484 are dispatched to clear the line of the blockage. Witness some of the finest plowing ever, as the rotary digs through the deep snow under a clear blue sky! This video won a Silver Telly Award, the highest possible in 1998.
Thrill to the action as the snowplow train assaults 10,015 foot Cumbres Pass, on the former Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad as some locomotives even sported the famed flying Rio Grande lettering on their tenders. Enjoy a tour of the interior of the rotary, and see all the gears and rods in motion. You’re also treated to scenes from the cab of engines 484 and 487, as well as many exclusive photo locations that could only be reached by snowmobile. This is no museum demonstration run. The assault on Windy Point is incredible with the snow drift higher than the hood of the Rotary Plow. This event took parts of 4 days, and culminated with the rotary train stopping because a huge boulder blocked the line. An awesome video that all will enjoy.

This Greg Scholl CLASSIC never fails to disappoint… a good one to watch during the winter months with a cup of hot cocoa. If you want a super “in-depth” look at Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad’s operations, regardless of whether the Rotary is used or not, then purchase this program… I would highly recommend it.

A rotary snow plow at work, the real thing…. in May at that. And it is steam powered making this more interesting. It is amaizing what this machine can do. And we see how it works on the inside, as well as cab rides in the engines that are pushing the plow. Fantastic show.

Another great Greg Scholl production showing snow clearing operations on the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad when Rotary OY is being used. This is well worth the purchase and will provide great entertainment seeing a way of railroading lost in today’s world.

This is a very enjoyable video that shows the narrow gauge Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad being cleared of snow in early May of 1997 by a steam powered rotary plow. The C&TS RR runs the 64 miles of track between Chama, New Mexico, and Antonito, Colorado. This is a section of what was once Denver & Rio Grand trackage that ran from Alamosa,CO, to Durango, CO, and was abandoned in 1968.
The viewer is given a very informative tour of the features and the controls of the rotary at the beginning of the video.
Even though it is early May, there is still 4 to 6 feet of snow over the track near the summit of Cumbres Pass, which is at 10,015 feet in elevation.
The scenery is great and the camera work is very good, capturing the snow plow from all angles. There are good, tight shots of the rotary in action and also some nice vista shots.
This is a good video and is worth the price.
