If you want to see train action, then Rochelle, Illinois is one of the best places in North America . With between 80 and 100 trains a day for Union Pacific and Burlington Northern Santa Fe, there is little down time! It’s the hot mainline for Union Pacific trains headed west over the former Chicago and Northwestern Railroad, and the BNSF over the former Burlington Route toward Minneapolis and points west. With two camera crews we won’t miss a single train, and in many cases you will see two shots of the same train from different positions. In addition to all the mainline freight action, we also see some track work being done on the diamonds, including some track equipment. An unexpected guest is the Loram Rail Grinder, which goes through on the Union Pacific. We have included some very interesting information from Loram about the Loram Rail Grinder operations.

In addition to Rochelle, we take you outside of town to see the new Union Pacific Global 3 under construction, as well as see UP mainline trains go by. We also visit the BNSF at Flagg Center, as well as both depots in Rochelle, and see all the different views of the diamonds which are the focal point of Rochelle. Also included in the first day is a flashback to 10 years ago when we visited Rochelle, and you see C&NW, and BN trains at the diamonds. This show is contemporary railroading at its finest, with the most modern trains, and locomotives. The primary program is the first day which is covered for 12 straight hours, and includes 50 trains, not counting multiple shots and track equipment. The DVD covers a complete second day with 50 more trains!

This program showcases BNSF and UP freights passing through this busy hotspot, along with some track equipment and flashback footage.

If you’re only going to buy one railfan video on Rochelle, make it this one! The Railroad Park is always exciting, but the producer does a nice job getting away from the park and including additional footage that will appeal to railfans, including depots, construction work at Union Pacific’s Global 3, and some very nice flashback scenes to railroad action from ten years before this video was recorded. The contemporary scenes are now approaching twenty years old, and the look of railroading has changed in that time. The two-camera shoot is very well done, and gives this video an enjoyable pace that goes beyond watching passing trains from the railfan pavilion. You can add this program to the “must have” list!

Rochelle – Truely a Railfan Hotspot, and Greg Scholl brings the Railroads in this town to life. With more that one person taping throughout the visit, the movie shows the small town way of life when Railroads are so prominent and a few “u-turns” to avoid the trains. There are plenty of Railrod names including CSX and a Canadian National zebra passing by, along with some older Cascade greens from the BN days. Don’t forget the Loran Rail Grinder which also makes an appearance. There is also a trip west of town to Global 3 as it was nearing completion. The movie is well narrated. Greg Scholl adds to the movie with a visit from “yesterday” as he takes the viewer back 10 years to “before the Park days”. Add in some Chicago and Northwestern mainline service.

  4. Chicago Bill

This is my favorite train watching platform and this tape does a good job showing all the variety. You can see the latest power from several railroads at Rochelle.
