Filmed in the 60s and 70s and early 80s, action starts with first generation E-Units and Geeps, and includes shot of the California Zephyr as well. You will also see more passenger trains at Denver’s Union Station. Dual gauge action, including steam, combines with standard gauge early diesels at Alamosa and Antonito. Also witness steam, with the Colorado & Southern on their isolated Climax Branch out of Leadville, accessible only by way of the D&RGW line! Just some of the locations and trains include Soldier Summit (where we’ll see a Utah Railway coal train), Moffat Tunnel at both east and west portals, A limestone run to Monarch Pass, BN at Leadville, Grand Junction, Tennessee Pass and many other locations! Combined with other Emery Gulash videos on the California Zephyr and many narrow gauge video’s of the Rio Grande, this program offers the railfan one of the most complete video series available on this railroad!

In this installment of the Odyssey Series there are lots of action in & around the Rocky Mountain State.

Aside from the D&RGW, there is also some other road names in part 1 like Union Pacific, CB&Q with diesels & later 2-8-0 number 641 on the Leadville Climax Branch, Mopac & Utah Railway, while part 2 has Santa Fe & Burlington Northern.

Locations for part 1 include Maxwell siding at Helper Utah, Soldier Summit with the Guilully Curves, the twin Nolan Tunnels, Castle Gate with the out of order crossing gates in June of 1965, Cliff Siding with the Book Cliffs, Thompson, Denver Union Terminal, the Royal Gorge bridge, Walsenburg, the Dual gauge line from Alamosa to Antonito with La Jara, & La Fruto, Leadville, Thistle, Colton, Price, Loma Siding, Grand Junction, & Littleton on the Joint Line.

Part 2 has the Moffatt Tunnel with track work at Winter Park, Tabernash near the Frasier River, Granby, Troublesome, Radium near the Colorado River, Bond with a junction to the Craig Branch, Dell, Burns Canyon, Rumford near route 24, Rifle, Una Siding, DeButte Lake, Acon, Beaver Tail Tunnel, Grand Junction, Montrose, Palmer Lake on the Joint Line, Greenland, Canon City, Parkdale at the Royal Gorge, Swissvale, Salida near the Monarch branch on the 3rd division which was narrow gauge until its conversion to standard gauge prior to the line’s abandonment in 1981, Brown Canyon, Granite, Leadville, Denver with 5771, Big 10 Curves, Cliff, Glenwood Canyon, Orestod, Byers Canyon, & the closed Tennessee Pass line.

A snippet of the theme song was also used on Trains Trains Trains for kids with KC Frog the puppet.

An “Odyssey” is a long voyage that sees many changes of it’s fortune. Here we see the Rio Grande Railroad in it’s long voyage. From the days of steam to diesel, narrow gauge to standard gauge, in various locations along the system. Both freight & passenger service is included. Excellent production well worth owning.

  3. Mwdonoughue

This program showcases both narrow gauge steam and standard gauge diesels in action on both freight and passenger trains, including the famous California Zephyr and future steam survivors such as #’s 484 and 487.
