Soo Line 2719 was built in 1923. She is an ALCO H-23 class 4-6-2 Pacific type steam locomotive. The steamer was used by the Soo Line in passenger train service until its retirement in 1959. In 1960, the Soo Line then donated the 2719 to the city of Eau Claire, Wisconsin where it proudly sat on display in Carson Park.
In 1996 the Locomotive & Tower Preservation Fund took on the task of rebuilding this beautiful locomotive to operating condition. This video covers the fascinating stages of the two year restoration that brought this steam locomotive back to life. The highlights include: last run in 1959 and move to Carson Park in 1960, wintertime removal from Carson Park, highway transport from Eau Claire to Altoona, various stages of rebuilding in the Altoona Roundhouse, Roundhouse and operating turntable scenes with Soo 2719 & the Soo 1003, 2719 steam-up and test runs at the Altoona yard, ferry trip and more break-in runs on the WC at Osceola, Wisconsin.

1. Silent films of regular Soo Line steam in the winter of 1953, as well as survivor 2718 on an excursion in the summer of 1955, & the main star of the show during an excursion in June of 1959 with tons of still images of 2719’s move to Eau Claire in February of 1960
2. An interview with one of the crewmembers on the restoration
3. 2719’s removal preparations from Carson Park in 1996
4. 2719’s move to the 1882 built C&NW Roundhouse in Altoona by road in the snow during December 1996
5. 2719’s restoration in Altoona throughout the rest of 1996 & all of 1997, with Mikado 1003 during a November ’97 photo session, & test runs with 1003 in July of 1998
6. A short freight with both engines on a Double-Header while being towed by C&NW 5501 & later running light on the WC
And 7. An Excursion on the WC with 1003 & 2719 together & later with 2719 on the Osceola & St. Croix Valley while being assisted by Northern Pacific SW1200 number 105
Sadly after September 2013, 2719 is back on display as it resides at the Lake Superior Railroad Museum.
