Head to Saskatchewan and Manitoba for action on both CN and CP mainlines, plus see the CANADIAN make a night stop in Melville. There is classic railroading, and we even see some trains with cabooses. We also see CP action on the line from North Portal to Moose Jaw, which is the line to the border with the USA. On the branch lines we see the CN branch west of Regina to Avonlea. Then we head to the Lewvan Branch which uses the uniquely Canadian GMD1. We see both the 2 axle, and 3 axel versions in service on this 60 pound rail branch. We also get to see classic grain elevator footage including vintage trucks delivering grain, and dumping it, plus grain being loaded into rail cars. We sadly see the demise of one on this line as well. This line is now gone, so its historical in many ways. Next we visit the Arcola Subdivision on CP Rail, before heading to the Kalium Potash Mine area to see both CP and CN trains which service this busy plant.

Originally released by Rail Innovations in 1997 & later acquired by the late Greg Scholl in 2011, there are a variety of diesels in the Canadian Provinces of Manitoba & Saskatchewan on Canadian National, Canadian Pacific, & Via Rail, including CN’s since-retired GMD-1 Switchers, & other road names like HLCX, GATX, & Soo Line.
Locations include Zelma, Milepost 87, Raymore at milepost 82.9, Quinton, West Bailey, Melville with the 1908 built station during Day & Night operations as well as a mention of the 1950s TV Docu-Series: Railroad Town, Milepost 122, Peachtrom Junction that connects with the Brandon Line, Milepost 74, Diamond Manitoba, Creece diamond which is east of Regina, Griswold, the Hot Spot of Portage La Prairie where Maynard Laing filmed a variety of Steam in 1959, North Portal near the US Border with North Dakota, Estevan Yard, Wayburn, the Moose Jaw branch, the Avonlea branch, the Levvan branch with CN’s GMD-1s, Estlin, Milepost 186.6 with one of the wooden grain elevators at Levvan that was in the process of being demolished during the camera crew’s visit, the Arcola Branch with Weston, Belle Plaine, Stoney Beach, Hegsley, Bellcarrys, & so much more.
All in all, Steve Bradley did a marvelous job narrating this program who also filmed these angles.

I live on the Canadian prairie, and many things have changed since this video was produced. A lot of the old wooden elevators have been replaced by giant inland terminals. Many of the wooden elevators are gone today. This video does an excellent job preserving our history in Saskatchewan. It’s great to see the GMD1’s in action. Very few remain today. A lot of the spur lines are also gone, or are in the hands of shortlines. The history of Canadian prairies has been saved thanks to videos like this for us to enjoy. This video shows local elevators with only a few cars being loaded with wenches used to advance the cars all the way to multi loading. We also see mainline action, and action serving a potash mine (Kalium, now served by Cando Rail Serves near Belle Plaine SK.). Grain and potash share the kingship in Saskatchewan, and this video is the best ever produced by anyone in the Canadian prairies.

Prairie Rails DVD is another great Greg Scholl video. You get to see the best of the western Canada prairies. You see both Canadian National and Canadian Pacific trains in this video. Main lines and branch lines. You even get to see a Grain Elevator being demolished.

Highly recommended according to myself because there are lot of great power and trains! We also see grain elevators in the Canadian prairies and one in demolition… That’s very sad to see this scene. So everyone who want to watch old CN GMD1, that’s an absolutely perfect choise.
