In the San Juan Mountains of Colorado and New Mexico one can leave the 21st Century behind on a steam powered time machine: the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad.
br>Running on rails laid down in the 1880’s, the Cumbres & Toltec is a living and breathing historical marvel of railroading the way it used to be. It operates over a remaining 64 mile section of the D&RGW’s San Juan Extension between Chama, New Mexico and Antonito, Colorado.
br>This program covers many of the high points of this scenic route in summer and fall. Thrill to the sight and sound of vintage K-36 class steam locomotives climbing the 4% grade to the 10,015 foot summit of Cumbres Pass! Enjoy the impressive collection of beautifully restored passenger cars plus double headed photo freights. Step back to the year 1959 and watch never seen before footage of revenue freights moving over the line, including sections of the railroad that no longer exist!
br>This is your ticket to the longest and highest narrow gauge railroad in North America!

In this one of the few 7Idea titles to have steam while majority of the company’s titles are contemporary diesels, there is a parade of steam locomotives carrying passengers & special freight trains on the route of the Rio Grande Narrow Gauge’s 4th Division, which includes vintage films from 1959, that also has a cameo scene of a Southern Pacific F unit.

Familiar locations on the Chama New Mexico to Antonito Colorado line include the Chama wye, yard, shops, & station, Highway 17 (5 times: 4 between Chama & Cumbres & 1 at Antonito), the Narrows, Lobato Lake, the Hollywood use only water tower at Lobato Siding, Wolf Creek Bridge which only one engine is allowed to cross, Dalton near Lobato Lodge, Crossing the state line 11 times, Cresco siding near the water tower, Coxo Telephone Booth near the 3rd Highway 17 crossing, the Rio Grande national forest, Windy Point, Cumbres Station with a wye & the only snowshed on the D&RGW, Tanglefoot Curve or Cumbres Loop, the Rio De Los Pinos bridge & Water Tower, Cascade Creek Trestle, Osier New Mexico with a mess hall built in 1989, Rock Tunnel at Toltec Gorge, Sublette, Big Horn wye, Whiplash Curve, Lava Water Tower, Hangman’s trestle, & ends at Antonito.

2 visits were made to the C&TS: October 2016, & August 2018 which the Trains Magazine video crew also attended that year.

Did you know that Cumbres is the Spanish word for Summit, as well as the depot’s first name Alta when built in 1880?

This is a great one of that familiar tourist road! Listen to that beautiful Lunkenheimer on 488 as 483! Woo! Neat footage of little 315 too!

Another phenomenal production from 7idea! Beautiful shots, and, I think a first for 7idea: drone footage! Nicely done, as I have come to expect from 7idea.
