This feature shows the mightiest steam engines on the Denver and Rio Grande system in all their glory. These giants are shown tackling the steepest grades on the railroad: Moffat Tunnel line, Soldier Summit, Tennessee Pass. Drag freights slog up mountains with three articulated engines pushing and pulling. Passenger trains strain to keep up speed in the high Rockies. We see these monsters charging along the “joint line” south of Denver, crossing the desert west of Grand Junction, and diving into the depths of the Royal Gorge. Runaways, landslides, and boiler explosions are covered. The feature begins with a ride on the daily passenger train over La Veta Pass to Alamosa at the height of the glory days of steam. We ride the train from the sun-drenched Cuchara Valley into a driving blizzard at the top of the pass, and back down into crystal-clear weather at the foot of the breathtaking Blanca Peaks, in an era long gone but not forgotten.

Narration. Sunday River Productions programs may feature Color film, B&W film, Music, Dubbed Sound and still photos.

This program was made in conjunction with the Rocky Mountain Railroad Club, as there is a bunch of great action prior to the end of Standard Gauge Steam on the D&RGW in 1956.

Locations include the La Veta pass line at La Veta, Sierra, Fort Garland, Blanca, Alamosa with a handful of narrow gauge 2-8-2s due to the fact that the route from Alamosa to Antonito was dual gauge until it was converted to only standard gauge after the end of D&RGW narrow gauge freight service in 1968, the S curves at Fir, Pueblo with non-articulated steam & the streamlined royal gorge which last ran in July of 1967, The Moffat Tunnel line at Leyden, Plainview, Pinecliff, both ends of the Moffat Tunnel, Tabernash, the Craig Branch with Tunnel 1, Tolland, Cliff, Byers Canyon, Craig with a mirrored still image of F unit 5434, Dotsero, Bond, Grand Junction, Palisades, Helper CO, Sinclair, the Soldier Summit route, the Joint Line with Denver, Littleton, Castle Rock, Sedalia, Louviers, Palmer Lake with a still image on the AT&SF in the early 90s, Colorado Springs, & the abandoned Tennessee Pass & the Royal Gorge routes at Selida with the narrow gauge on the 3rd division, the forgotten South Park Line, Malta, Keeldar, Mitchell, Eagle River Canyon, & Minturn which thankfully, a portion between Canon City & Parkdale has been preserved as a tourist line, & speaking of preservations, in 2006-2019, the La Veta pass line was once a tourist route.

There are also other road names like the Duluth Missabe & Iron Range Yellowstones, A Union Pacific Challenger with a mention of 3985, the MoPac Colorado Eagle, & the CB&Q Zephyrs. Not to mention a wreck of Yellowstone 222 & an aftermath of a boiler explosion on challenger 3703 in October of 1952.

While several films in this program are in Black in White, there are also segments in color as well.

The narrator’s voice and sound is terrible. You can’t understand a lot of what he says and if you turn the volume up, it distorts even more. It was this way when I played it the first time and again when I played it the third time last week. Disgusting after paying $43.95 for the DVD.

  3. Chase

This is a really neat DVD with lots of footage of Rio Grande’s articulated locomotives hard at work all over the system. It also includes footage of other Rio Grande standard gauge steam that is long gone. Learn about the D&RGW’s usage of the Le Chatelier water brake in this DVD and just enjoy all the historic footage that is provided on this DVD.
