I bought this production on DVD directly from Bob Loehne several years ago. He and his American Altavista film crew captured some EXCELLENT precious moments from this once-in-a-lifetime event.

After the many years of our most beloved Berk, Nickel Plate 765, handling the trip, this was the best way to “finish out” the era of big steam in the New River Gorge… with another 4-8-4 Northern, of course. Ross Rowland’s C&O Greenbrier, #614, had pulled the New River Train a couple times before 765 took over the honors every year up until 1993… It was only fitting that another 4-8-4 pull it one last time. 🙂

Our great Milwaukee Road 261 never looked better… Fresh off of a recent restoration and return to service, she handled the 30+ car train like a pro. There is plenty of loud stack-talk throughout, and plenty of exhilarating runbys. This is definitely another one of Bob’s American Altavista “classics” that you do NOT want to miss having in your video collection! As always, his narration is witty and humorous throughout.
Mr. Loehne continually explains the rich history of each area the train passes through… Which he faithfully does in every one of his other presentations as well. This program is always a nice “go-to” for me if I am desiring to see unique New River Train action which doesn’t involve ol’ faithful 765.

In the American altavista version of the final run of steam on the new river gorge which is the only time that the 1944 Alco Built Northern traveled to the region on the route of CSX freights & Amtrak’s Cardinal, there is onboard footage, trackside scenes, & even admire the lovely autumn colors in the mountains during the days & nights.

Along the way, there are flashbacks to the region where nickel plate 765 was in charge of these trips. There are more producers that made a visit to the region at the exact same time: Greg Scholl (both on great steam trains volume 3 & America by Rail winter wonderland which was co-produced by railway productions) main line motion pictures, skyfire video, a PBS show: Tracks Ahead, & Goodheart productions.

While it’s sad that 1994 was the final year for not only the original Norfolk Southern steam program & of course mainline steam through West Virginia’s scenic line from Huntington to Hinton, it is fortunate that these scenes can capture what the true spirit of big mainline action is all about.
