KCS acquired this route in 1993 from MidSouth Rail and is former Illinois Central trackage. The Meridian Speedway operates as a joint venture with the Norfolk Southern (a 30% owner) and is used as a vital link to transport intermodal, manifest, bulk commodities and energy trains across their systems. Today this is part of the shortest transcontinental railroad in the southern USA, as it connects states in the Southeast to the Southwest.
