N&W Class J 4-8-4 #611 wraps up our modern trilogy with the first trips of 2016 without diesel helpers, and then the last series of trips in 2016. See great lighting and cool weather as 611 leaves early and returns late in the day, traveling along the mainline of the former Southern Railway, and then at Hurt, Virginia she diverges westward over the former Virginian Railway to Roanoke. There is some spirited running, and great exhaust sounds as she pulls the heavy train along this roller coaster route. This series of trips was a real “Sleeper” in that it had fewer chasers, and perhaps the best weather (clear and cool) during the 2016 outings.

Next we head to Manassas, Virginia to enjoy the final excursions of 2016. This line is known for its roller-coaster topography with Linden Hill being the steepest climb each way between Manassas and Front Royal. Many of the other small towns are seen such as Bulls Run, and Markham. We also get some close-ups of 611 in Manassas. Two-camera coverage provides excellent diversity in scenes and angles and non-stop action on this historic route.

Not as review of the video itself, more of the format. I paid extra for each of these three videos in Blue Ray format and I can’t get any of them to play on any of the 4 players in my house. If you like the 611 like I do, I strongly suggest you buy this in DVD format instead.

Like the first 2 volumes, the majority of this footage was shot by Brady Sanker. Surprisingly enough, this is the first time that Greg’s Brother Randy Scholl came back for helping out with the additional footage, which was also the the first time we saw Randy’s girl (Victoria Scholl) as a production assistant in the closing credits. Sadly this is the official final GSVP title to be narrated by John Edward hingsbergen who worked with Greg since 1986, & unfortunately ended his life in November of 2017.
