We focus on two routes through Virginia, the Norfolk Southern Christiansburg District between Roanoke and Montgomery, and the CSX between White Sulphur Springs in the Alleghany Sub to Buttons Bluff in the James River Sub. To add to your enjoyment, a brief interlude includes previously unreleased views of locations featured in the previous release of American Railway, and a look ahead to locations in the east of Virginia that will feature in a future edition.

In the first half of the program, we follow the Norfolk Southern Christiansburg District west from Roanoke with filming locations at Salem, Pierpont, Elliston, Shawsville and Montgomery. West from Roanoke, the Christiansburg and Whitethorne Districts run parallel, diverging after Pierpont. While one camera is at Elliston, the others take a look at the Whitethorne District between Kumis and Riverside. After Montgomery, this section finishes with a scene at the eastern end of Bluefield, West Virginia, where our journey along The Pokey began (AR24).

The interlude includes scenes at Gaithersburg , Edgewood and Havre de Grace in Maryland, and Penola, Doswell, Lorton and Arlington in the east of Virginia.

The second half of the program features the CSX, we travel east along Allegheny Subdivision from White Sulphur Springs, in West Virginia, into Virginia, with locations at Alleghany, Covington, Low Moor, and Clifton Forge, the eastern boundary of the Alleghany Sub. From there, we head south on the James River Sub to Iron Gate, finishing at the spectacular overlook at Buttons Bluff.

All scenes were filmed in May, 2017, using three cameras to increase the number of locations and enhance the views of passing trains.

After deciding to give Lineside Video another chance I went with a Blu-ray option to see if that eliminated my playback issues. The disk itself is an odd purple color so I wasn’t holding out too much hope, however I’m happy to say that the Blu-ray played on the first try in my Blu-ray player, no need for further troubleshooting. Unlike LVP’s DVD disks that require some trial and error with DVD players to find one that will actually play them, I would recommend those that purchase LVP products consider the Blu-ray option over the DVD and avoid the headache.

The video is clearly well thought out and a lot of effort put in to filming locations and some added history to spots featured. The narration is good and not intrusive. There are one or two instances where camera work wasn’t so good but overall the video is well shot. Audio is very good from the trains to the landscapes to the passing wildlife, everything sounds very good. Half way through the movie is an interlude with shots not seen from the previous movie in this series. It’s odd to have an interlude but its well done/implemented and narration keeps the viewer engaged and in the loop on information. This is a feature that I wouldn’t mind seeing more of. The presentation is broken up into NS on the first part followed by CSX on the 2nd half. Overall this is a well done production that doesn’t overstay its welcome.
