We braved the dark of night, howling snowstorms and sub-zero conditions to bring you the story of Northshore Mining Railroad: The Little Giant! A successor to the original Reserve Mining Railroad, this is the little railroad that could, did, and does in a big way!
This small, tough operation exists for one purpose… to move raw iron ore from the mine at Babbitt, Minnesota to the processing mill at Silver Bay, on the shore of Lake Superior, where it is processed into taconite pellets and shipped to steel mills down the lakes. Set in the woods of Lake Superior’s North Shore, you’ll see views of stunning beauty, from the fiery colors of fall to the stark white of Minnesota’s fierce winter, it’s all here.
You’ll not only see amazing scenery, but the railroad equipment as well. Old EMD’s are the power of choice here. Not as flashy as the new stuff, but old units that refuse to die. SD40-2’s, SD40-3’s, SD40’s, and even an old SD18 lead the charge on trains. No matter how brutal the weather gets, these old EMD soldiers keep toiling away. See them thundering away in run 8, straining to pull heavy 17,000 ton trains of iron ore. Stand trackside as 155-car trains roll by down to the mill at Silver Bay.
This program has it all. Explore the operations of the Northshore Mining Railroad with a look at the facilities in Silver Bay, rotary dumping activities, and giant lake freighters loading and unloading on Lake Superior! See the beautiful colors of fall in Northeastern Minnesota’s Arrowhead region. Listen to melodious airhorns echoing through the forest. Witness the brutal blast of winter as we film in all conditions, both day and night. Enjoy viewing in crisp HD detail.
