Here are rare color scenes of N&W steam from 1952 to 1959. N&W locations covered include the Shenandoah Division, Roanoke, the triple track Christiansburg Mountain grade, Shaffers Crossing and more. We’ll see steam from many N&W classes: J Class, M Class and Y Class locomotives are all shown.
Included is the only known footage of the 1956 wreck of the 611 when she left the rails at speed. Both passenger and freight trains are seen on the “Punkin’ Vine Line” (Roanoke to Winston Salem), with streamlined steam and M Class action on the Blacksburg-Christiansburg local (known as the Huckleberry Train). Sadly, we see a big Class Y5 getting scrapped.
We see the famous Virginia Creeper on the Abingdon Branch and freights headed up by big 2-8-8-2 steam such as Y3, Y6a and Y6b locomotives while we see 611 on a fan trip in 1959, plus a S-1 Class on the turntable, and inside the engine facility at Roanoke where the coaling tower is being coaled up. Early diesels too!
Shot on silent film and that’s how it comes to you, backed with music, as silent “film” now on DVD. 8mm color and B&W film professionally digitized and color corrected. No narration. Subtitles with additional information. Three discs, total run time is 3 hours.
