Norfolk Southern’s Georgia Division 148 Mainline from Atlanta to Chattanooga is one of the south’s busiest, yet it remains unknown to most railfans. Travel with Green Frog as we explore the single-track line well hidden in the forested mountains of North Georgia. We’ll start in Atlanta’s Inman Yard, crossroads of the system and home to NS’s biggest intermodal terminal. From here trains are dispatched to the Northeast, the Carolinas, Florida, New Orleans, Birmingham, and Chattanooga.
br>See auto racks, double stacks, piggybacks, and Roadrailers race across this hill-and-dale mainline. Watch long manifests and heavy coal trains from Appalachia and Wyoming behind Dash 9-40CW’s and SD70s slog up the long Braswell Mountain grade, often using radio-controlled mid-train helpers. Run-through power from Union Pacific, Conrail, Kansas City Southern, and Southern Pacific are frequent sights. Our tour ends at Debutts Yard in Chattanooga, also site of a major engine shop where NS readies its newest power for service..
