Experience the excitement of 4-8-4 Class J #611 and 2-6-6-4 #1218 on former Norfolk and Western trackage once more. This “Pure N&W” program covers these locomotives throughout the system from Roanoke to Cincinnati and north from Portsmouth on the Columbus line. You’ll enjoy highlights of trips shot between 1987 and 1989. The 1987 NRHS convention in Roanoke is highlighted with 611 on a passenger train and 1218 on a coal train as the two trains run side-by-side as they climb Christiansburg grade westbound. Lineside scenes are accompanied by on-train scenes. Doubleheaders are also shown with the two engines as well as countless scenes of the engines separately on other trips such as the 1988 Independence Limited with 1218, 611 on the Portsmouth line in 1989, 1218 on the Columbus line in 1987 and 1988, 611 on a run from Portsmouth to Bluefield for the first time since 1959, and more.

There is some truly exciting action at some of the best locations along the Norfolk Southern (former N&W). This period was considered the pinnacle of the Norfolk Southern Steam Program, with both engines in top form at the same time. This is a nice souvenir of the period and some of the finest steam action anywhere.

This DVD totally IS 5 stars, as other reviewers have pointed out!!! Every single shot of Norfolk and Western’s “Dynamic Duo” (the 2-6-6-4 and 4-8-4) in this production is action-packed and full of thrills! You will NEVER see the Class “A” and Class “J” like this again… ESPECIALLY when it comes to the glorious events of the 1987 NRHS Convention… when Norfolk Southern, with the late, great Robert B. Claytor at the helm, temporarily suspended revenue freight traffic on the westbound line from Roanoke to Walton… JUST so 611 and 1218 could “strut their stuff” up Christiansburg Grade!

Don’t miss out on witnessing some quality camera angles from one of the greatest railfan events of all time! The other 80s “outings” of these Super-Steamers are covered pretty nicely on this DVD as well. 🙂

This program features N&W 611 and 1218 on home rails in Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia. Featured are:
    – N&W 611 on a one-way trip from Portsmouth, OH to Bluefield, WV – the first time it had run on parts of the route since 1959
    – The 1987 NRHS Convention with 611 and 1218 running solo, side-by-side, and doubleheaded
    – 1218 pulling the 1988 Independence Limited from Roanoke, VA to Portsmouth and beyond
    – Two different outings by 1218 on the Columbus line
    – 611 on an excursion from Cincinnati in April 1989

This is definitely a 5 Star rating for this video and one of the best steam events of all 1980s. Norfolk Southern had an annual event in the summer of 1987 NRHS convention in Roanoke, Virginia and Norfolk & Western home built engines Class A 1218, and Class J 611 performed a side by side excursion run on former N&W rails. Not coincidentally this was the first excursion I ever watched as a young kid and I’ve been following Steam excursion locomotives ever since. Both 1218 and 611 were the two most powerful Steam locomotives ever built in the steam era. The original Norfolk Southern Steam program has always been my favorite for a lot of reasons. Not only did the 611 and 1218 operated in the 80s and 90s but they also had a lot of good members that are not around anymore. And as of 2019, the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke has no plans to return the class A back to operating condition as the overhaul work was not completed in time when the Norfolk Southern pulled the plug in 1994. If you love N&W Steam giants however such as the 1218 & 611 then this is video that you are sure to enjoy for a long time to come.

This 1990 GSVP program features both 611 & 1218 during the 1987 NRHS convention, along with other separate trips with both engines on their own. If you love Greg’s JVC era, you’ll love this pure 25 year old tape!
