This DVD is a wonderful program commemorating 40 years of the Norfolk Southern Railway! It covers the history of its biggest predecessors, including the Norfolk & Western, the Southern, and the Consolidated Rail Corporation (Conrail). Norfolk Southern’s most dominant locomotive is the General Electric DASH 9, many of which have been modernized into the high-tech, AC-motored diesels. Of course, this program includes the colorful NS heritage fleet of 20 locomotives that were painted in 2012 to represent a lot of its predecessors, and they are still fan favorites today. Like many of today’s Class I railroads, NS established its own version of the controversial Precision Scheduled Railroading, which may be unfortunate for a lot of employees but beneficial and economical for the business. Regardless of those changes, the DVD is still a well-explained video documenting the history of the 40-year-old railroad in the eastern United States. It is surely worth watching for any Norfolk Southern fan!
