Norfolk Southern’s former Conrail main line between Pittsburgh and Conway Yard once carried the heaviest tonnage of any rail line in the United States. Today this line hosts nearly 70 freight and Amtrak trains. This video shows 24 hours of action between CP Bell, five miles west of downtown Pittsburgh, and Conway Yard, in August of 2000, and gives a spectacular look at NS’s operations east of Conway Yard 15 months after Conrail was split up between CSX and NS.
