Follow Nickel Plate Berkshire #759 from Hagerstown, Maryland toward Roanoke on Norfolk & Western’s Shenandoah Valley line as it pulls a freight. We’re treated to many run-bys, action filled pacing sequences and a servicing at Shenandoah. This action is on April 24, 1971.

May 1, 1971 was the first day of Amtrak, but the new national passenger carrier had already decided to end the famous N&W passenger train “Pocahontas”. Wanting to see their name train go out in style, the N&W asked Amtrak to pull the last run of the “Pocahontas” with NKP #759. Steam on the head-end of a major passenger train, in 1971, what a sight!

Chase the train east from Roanoke, and climb the famous Blue Ridge grade with 759 and then pace her in eastern Virginia.

This DVD documents the NKP 759, as if pulls a freight from Hagerstown, MD to Roanoke, VA. Then the 759, with Norfolk & Western lettering on the tender, pulls the last eastbound Pocahontas from Roanoke to Norfolk, before the train, along with the rest of N&W’s passenger trains were discontinued by Amtrak.
