The Utah Railway has the only 6 MK5000’s built, and they ply their trade dragging coal trains over Soldier Summit. These Morrison-Knudsen monsters sound very different with their big Caterpillar prime movers, and they look splendid in the Utah’s red and gray paint. You’ll see these unique locomotives twisting and turning up Price River Canyon as they ahead for Soldier Summit, the fifth highest transcontinental railroad crossing in the US. Highball Productions visited Soldier Summit in January, 2002, and were granted permission to visit the loader, the unit’s cab, and Utah’s Martin Shops.
