Milwaukee Road 261 is one of the most beloved steam locomotives in preservation. In late spring 2017, she pulled excursion trains between Minnesota and North Dakota on the Red River Valley and Western’s former Great Northern and Northern Pacific trackage. On the return trip to the twin cities, the 261 traveled on BNSF railway’s Morris and Wayzata subdivisions. They ended their program at the Mississippi River at Nicollet Island in Minneapolis. There were even a few pacing scenes on the return trip. 261 had a short 10 year career on the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific railroad as it became a victim of dieselization and put on display at the National railroad museum in Green Bay, Wisconsin before 1960. In the early 1990s, she was leased by the North Star Rail Inc. to restore the locomotive in operating condition and since September 1993, 261 has become one of the famous 4-8-4 excursion locomotives. This is a must have.
