Mallets are always interesting steam locomotives to watch, and these are truly a rare bunch: Italian built 0-4-4-0 mallet tank engines at work in scenic Eritrea. From the Red Sea port of Massawa across the deserts and up though the mountains, over the bridges and through the tunnels to Arbaroba and the capital of Eritrea, Asmara. Along the way we’ll see the people, camels and of course the kids of this former Italian colony. In fact, the railway was built by the Italians. You’ll see freight trains, passenger trains and double headers – and a cab ride.

Here is one for every railfan. Primitive railroading unlike anything we have seen in North America. Little tank engines pulling short trains (3 to 8 cars long average) that are passenger, freight and a mixed combination. Over hills and mountains, through rock cuts, over bridges and around the curves. We get a cab ride and watch the coal being shovelled by hand. Exciting as we also see the other main mode of transportation that was not quite as fast….. camel caravans. Railroading in a different world at it’s best.
