A regional railroad, the San Luis and Rio Grande operated for D&RGW trackage from Alamosa east to Walsenburg, over the steep La Veta Pass, plus two shorter branches out of Alamosa. La Veta pass certainly needs steam to really shone, so the railroad obtained former Lake Superior & Ishpeming Railroad #18 and #20 from the Grand Canyon Railroad.

#18 is a loud 2-8-0, and puts on a great show as we do 3 different photo charters. There are some sections of nearly 3% grade. There are also a couple of tunnels and several loops and scenic views. A great mountain pass for shooting steam video!

On one photo charter we shoot a passenger train consist and have some fine shots of #18 and its train. The last charter we cover begins in the early morning hours with a freight consist. There are some great shot on this mountain pass.

This may be the last time you’ll ever see steam on La Veta Pass. The steam engines have been sold and the railroad is bankrupt.

In this recent sequel to last year’s title with Southern Pacific 1744, Former Lake Superior & Ishpeming 2-8-0 number 18 participates on not 1, not 2, but 3 specials.

    Here’s the timeline:

Saturday May 3, & Sunday May 4, 2008: a mostly hopper car train with 2 ore dump cars to La Veta & back which fun fact: Peter Crooke of Highball Productions was also on the same trip. There is also a Caboose ride as well as a meet with a freight that is led by B40-8 number 8527, plus a ballast regulator. This is the longest segment in this program.

Thursday August 26, 2010: a 5 coach passenger special (this trip was recorded after the Durango & Silverton held it’s traditional Railfest from 1999 to 2016). Unfortunately, the battery on the Camera died at milepost 211.8 east of Sierra on this trip but it was either swapped or quickly recharged.

And finally, another freight special on October 18, 2012 where 2 diesels handle the coaches for the people who booked this 1 day event.

Locations on the line include the Alamosa Yard & depot, Rio Grande River Bridge, MP 239, The S curves at both Russell & Fir, The Upper Beaman Tunnel, Sierra siding, MP 213 & 212, the wye & sidings at La Veta, MP 188, Kincaid, MP 194 & 206, El Dorato road, MP 211.8, & 208.75, Long View, MP 238, Blanca, & MP 218.

In recent months, number 18 has moved to the Colebrookdale Railroad in Pennsylvania.

All of these scenes were captured by Ron Burkhard.

Overall, Chris Kovacs did a marvelous job narrating this La Veta Pass sequel.
