A local freight railroad which ran 11.79 miles between a connection with the Southern Pacific at Ione to Martell, California, the Amador Central was run and operated by the Georgia Pacific Lumber Company. With outbound traffic of lumber and forest products, this railroad served as an important source of transportation. But in 1997, the plant and the railroad were sold, the plant was converted for particle board manufacturing, and the railroad eventually closed. We follow the last few days of operation on the Amador Central to its last day of service on March 28, 1997.
Curtis Watson –
The Amador Central (later the Amador Foothills) Railroad is something of a hometown icon for me. I remember seeing its Baldwin locomotive skirting the rims of the foothills on its way to Ione. It deeply saddens me that the mill (and thus the railroad) were shut down. But I am very grateful that people cared enough to record its final days of operation. This is a quaint shortline, in what I feel is the most beautiful scenery in the country (if not the world). If you are interested in fallen flags, shortline railroads, scenic rail lines, or some combination of the three, this is a program you will definitely enjoy!
