Enjoy contemporary mainline diesel railroading in the Ouachita Mountains of Oklahoma and Arkansas as the Kansas City Southern lugs trains over the steep mountain grade of Rich Mountain. This is big time railroading as you’ll follow the KCS on the steepest part of the entire system, with steep grades and lots of curves between Heavener, Oklahoma, and Mena, Arkansas. You’ll see a variety of trains, including coal trains, grain trains, and general merchandise. If you enjoy heavy-duty modern mainline railroading, then this program is for you! Photographed years before it was purchased & merged with Canadian Pacific, the KCS has a huge variety of diesels on this 100% freight only mainline with appearances by other road names like Union Pacific, BNSF, CRFX leasing, TFM Leasing, Chicago & Northwestern with the operation lifesaver logo on number 6708, & Southern Pacific.

Note that some of the KCS units in this program are referenced to some of the steam engines from other road names like 4005 for example which the Union Pacific Big Boy itself is still on display at the James Donovan Forney Transportation Museum in Denver Colorado, as well as 4006 for instance which the UP 4-8-8-4 is still on display at Kirkwood Missouri with Frisco 1522, New York Central Mohawk 2933, Norfolk & Western Y Class 2-8-8-2 2156, & Southern Pacific 4460, not to mention 3967 which in late May 1993, Challenger 3985 was disguised as the scrapped sister engine for the 40th anniversary of the Rocky Mountain Railroad Club, plus 4012 which is still on display at Steamtown in Scranton Pennsylvania, & 4023 is still at Omaha Nebraska.

Locations include Heavener with a diesel re-fueling station, Zoe (not the Orange-Yellow monster from Sesame Street), Stapp, Blue Cut, Statt Hill, Page siding, the Oklahoma/Arkansas state line near Rich Mountain, Fogel, Howard, Milepost 366 with an unprotected crossing, Eagleton with an unprotected crossing, state highway 59 crossing, Acorn, & ends at Mena yard.

While Les Jarrett does an incredible job filming the fallen flag itself, this program was narrated by the late Lane Venardos.

During the history segment, there are some historic still images during the early years of steam.

KCS, the smallest of the Class 1’s. When we think of Oklahoma & Arkansas, we don’t think of mountains. The term “mountains” is often used for “high hills” which this region featured is primarily. Anytime you get hilly regions, you get steep grades and lots of curvacur in the railroads, which really adds to the enjoyment of railfans. No exception here…… a great video that is mainline action working hard to transport goods between the US south and the heartland of the American midwest.
