Four shows, six discs! In the early 1990s, Iron Horse America set out to document CSX railroading on the former Baltimore & Ohio mainlines crossing the Allegheny Mountains of the eastern United States. The result was this 4-volume, 6 disc, collection filled with over eleven hours of dramatic coverage.

Volume 1, which was filmed in cooperation with CSX , takes you on an extensive tour of the CSX mainline that follows the Potomac River between Hancock, West Virginia and Cumberland, Maryland. This busy ex-B&O double-track mainline twists its way through the spectacular valleys and hills of the Alleghenies.
Volume 2: Over 150 years ago, the B&O Railroad reached Cumberland, located strategically at the eastern base of the Allegheny Mountains, and constructed a large terminal there to support operations over its two legendary grades: the West End and Sand Patch. In 1992-1993, Iron Horse America visited Cumberland Terminal to document B&O’s successor, CSX Transportation.
Volume 3 covers the West End in 2 discs. This legendary route crosses the eastern Continental Divide from Cumberland, Maryland to Grafton, West Virginia. Four steep grades of up to 2.8 percent make helper engines necessary over an incredible 66 mile district.
In the course of 2 discs, Volume 4 completely covers legendary Sand Patch grade. CSX’s Sand Patch Grade in western Pennsylvania is one of the most popular railfanning sites in the eastern U.S. Heavy tonnage; high-density traffic and grueling mountain grades are trademarks of this famous former B&O route.

  1. devon

This dvd set is a must have. Nearly 12 hrs of early 90’s csx action for a reasonable price. Fillow the Cumberland sub from Hancock to Cumberland and then the Keystons sub as well as the Mountain sun and it’s many Mountain grades. See many of the CSX predecessors paint schemes. Hear new GE’s and older EMD SD models chug as they pull heavy tonnage into the Allegheny Mountain range.

  2. Mwdonoughue

This DVD set shows CSX freight and Amtrak passenger trains as they make their way along rails that were once owned by the Baltimore & Ohio, through the Allegheny Mountains. There are also some special moves, such as MARC passengers specials, the CSX F-Units, and a visit to the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad in Cumberland, Maryland.

  3. rickyfreni

With a great variety of power both old & new especially appearances by multiple fallen flag road names, this entire collection also features other locomotives on Marc commuter trains, Amtrak capitol limited, & the western Maryland scenic railroad with Alco built diesels that have since been moved to other tourist attractions, & Former Lake Superior & ishpeming 2-8-0 #734 which has since been out of service at the WMSR’s ridgely West Virginia shops.
