This documentary style program gives us a rare look at a self-contained railroad. Every railroad that runs in and out of Chicago interchanges with the Belt Railway of Chicago (BRC). We’ll see hump yard action and watch cars being humped from the control tower. We’ll go inside the tower and the full service engine house. We’ll get some cab views and visit the dispatching center.

And, of course, we’ll see the trains! Transfers, yard jobs and mainline trains. We’ll visit Clearing Yard and use maps to get a better idea of the flow of cars through Clearing Yard.

This is vintage mid-nineties footage, shot using nineties equipment. It is not as sharp as programs shot today. Still, these are interesting scenes, many not covered elsewhere, and the narration is informative and top notch.

From Hump yards, to dispatch towers to refueling shops, This 1996 Program was dedicated to the loss of Franklin Brown. In addition to the belt railway, there are other diesels on Santa Fe, Soo Line, CSX, Chicago & Northwestern, and Most important of all: Southern Pacific.

I really enjoy videos that take you beyond the railfan’s point of view. This is one of those videos. Not only was there a very descriptive dialog but you got some excellent behind the scenes footage. You hear first hand from the dispatchers how they control train movements. There is a variety of power on this video both BRC and foreign. If you like to learn about RR operations I suggest this series and plan to purchase the entire series.
