EMD’s F units are THE classic American locomotive. Join us as we look for those that made it into the 90s. We start the program with BAR’s beautiful F3 in excursion service, MBTA F10’s in their last year of service then in Cape Cod’s pretty orange and green, MARC F’s and an E and CSX F’s in Baltimore. Long Island has ex F unit “power packs,” PATRAIN on the last day of service then as Shore Line in New Haven paint. Both Amtrak and Metro North unique double powered FL9’s along the Hudson, GO’s control cars, VIA and Montreal commuter F’s all make an appearance.

The F-units that are shown in this 1992 program in order are:

    1. Bangor & Aroostook 502 in Maine in 1991 with chopped nose GP38 number 94 on the rear that was once Conrail 7666/766.

    2. The final months of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s own F-units at Boston’s North Station in 1991 before the Fleet Center & Zakim Bridge was constructed in the same location, as well as before the debut of Amtrak’s Downeaster near Christmas 2001, plus the hot spot of Ayer with a Guilford unit.

    3. Cape Cod Railroad between Hyannis & Sagamore MA (before the Cape Cod Central in 1999) with 3 MBTA F-units in the replica paint scheme of the Great Northern, including number 1100.

    4. Long Island with former Milwaukee Road units in New York State

    5. Port Authority of Allegheny County with the final day of the F-3s in service especially 6490

    6. Former Patco unit number 6690 painted in New Haven colors on the Valley Railroad in Essex Connecticut & at Deep River Siding during the ’91 railfan weekend (Note: this segment was made during production of another Highball Show-Steam Northeast).

    7. Back to New York State, this time with former New Haven FL9s painted for Metro-North & Amtrak on the Hudson River Line between Albany & New York City

    8. Maryland Area Regional Commuter in the Washington DC area with former Baltimore & Ohio units as well as former Clinchfield F7s in CSX paint, plus number 82 meeting with CSX 6224, & Chessie System 6081 at Brunswick

And 9. Go Transit Commuter in Canada with Via Rail & the Montreal Commuter with former Canadian Pacific F9s during 1989

F Units were once the mainstay on the rails. Today, all that remains are a few in shortline, regional & maybe a few on commuter & tourist action. The idea of a video on these old slick units is great, but the quality of this video could have been much better. But then…. take into account when this video was made, cameras were not quite the same as they are today. While somewhat disappointed, I am pleased to see what I did.

Well, I have to give this one credit for the various F-units presented but over all I think it’s one of the worst DVDs I have in my collection. Almost all the scenes were blurry and very amateurish. There are too many good DVDs to buy to spend any money on this one. This is my only Highball Productions video so I don’t know if this is their normal quality but it doesn’t make me want any others from them. I hope I’m wrong for their sake.
