First the program starts with an introduction from 2 editors of Trains Magazine: Jim Wrinn, & Kevin Keefe. The main hour long feature was originally released in 1995 as volume 2 of the On Location Series as evidenced by Kevin hosting from the control/editing room. From Sunrise to Sunset, Countless diesels from SD40-2s & SD60s to today’s SD90Macs provide a beautiful sight as what railroading in Pennsylvania’s favorite hot spot on the Quadruple track mainline is all about. And yes, there are train meets included, as well as a cab ride on a Conrail Geep. Aside from the Big Curve, a Visit to the Altoona railroad museum is included. Besides Conrail, other road names like Amtrak, NS, NJT, Santa Fe, & even a surprise visit from Nickel Plate 765 during an NS Steam excursion with Heritage units 6012 & 8100.

This video is a fascinating documentary about the Horseshoe Curve and the Juniata Shops in Altoona, Pennsylvania and a little history of the Pennsylvania railroad. The first part of the video is a 1995 visit and then 22 years later, Trains Magazine updated their visit in part 2. Jim Wrinn and Kevin Keefe were editors of Trains Magazine. Kevin Keefe narrated the updated version in 2017. Pennsylvania railroad was the standard railroad of the world and former K4 Pacific locomotive 1361 was even seen at the railroaders memorial museum at Altoona but it was overhauled at the time. 1361 was built in 1918 by the Pennsylvania’s Juniata shops in Altoona and during retirement in the late ‘50s, it was on displayed at the famous Horseshoe Curve until return to service in the middle 1980s. As of 2019 and 2021, she is currently owned by the railroaders memorial museum group under going restoration and 1361 IS the pride of Altoona. From Pennsylvania railroad to its merger with their arch rival New York central which formed the Penn Central in the late ‘60s. Conrail came along in 1976 and Big Blue was the paint scheme on the railroad. Conrail operated for more than 20 years in America until it’s merger in 1999 with the split of today’s CSX and Norfolk Southern. This video shows Heritage units of Norfolk Southern and between 2012 and 2013, Nickel Plate Road Berkshire steam locomotive 765 made appearances on the curve. Norfolk Southern’s black thoroughbred scheme logo May rule the rails, but the trains never stop coming no matter who owns it. Horseshoe curve should be high on your list of places to visit.

If you have seen the original VHS version of this video and enjoyed it, you will really like the dvd version. Like the VHS, we see Horseshoe Curve at it’s finest, only the dvd version adds some time from 2017 with the Norfolk Southern ownership. Horseshoe Curve is one of the best locations in the USA for train watching, being that it is a Historic location, and with triple track, the trains just keep coming no matter who owns the line.
