Selkirk, New York is home to the biggest railroad yard in the northeast. This former New York Central, then Conrail, Yard, is now owned by CSX. The west end of the yard is where you’ll see Chicago Line trains, and the east end hosts trains for the Boston Line, the River Line and the branch to the Port of Albany. Highball Productions spent two snowy winter days at Selkirk shortly after the Conrail sale that brought Selkirk Yard to CSX. There’s still Conrail power to be seen. Selkirk has always been an exciting place to railfan, and is even more so when the snow flies. Check out the northeast’s favorite hot spot!

In part 5 of the Highball Hot Spots Collection, Camera operator Peter Crooke who is also the narrator of this program, traveled to Selkirk New York on February 3rd & 4th 2000 in the winter. There are road names like Conrail, CSX, Canadian Pacific, HLCX, Burlington Northern, & Canadian National, with a huge variety of freight trains heading to & from Chicago, Albany, the Hudson River line to NYC, Boston, & others.

Colorful locomotives, heavy traffic, an iconic location … and snow! CSX and Norfolk Southern had acquired Conrail shortly before this program was released in 2000, and CSX had taken ownership of Selkirk Yard. Much of the train traffic in the northeast passes through Selkirk, and there’s still plenty of Conrail blue … and it looks especially nice in the snow! One of my favorites in Highball’s “Hot Spots” series.

Selkirk New York… a great location for rail fans. CSX puts on a fine show with all the trains in & out of the yard. Conrail is still very present here. I really like the fact that the producer choose to do this in the winter. With the snow flying, it makes for very interesting viewing. Well done.
