Infamous in steam days for its long, tight tunnels and tight curves, the Rathole has been modernized and daylighted, but is still a great show. This storied line has many stories: It is owned by the City of Cincinnati, leased to the Cincinnati, New Orleans and Texas Pacific and operated by the Norfolk Southern as part of its Central Division. It is an important and busy link in the NS empire. Though many of the tunnels are gone, the area is still a railroad challenge and the big cuts at Tateville and Kings Mountain are quite scenic.

Very well put together. A very interesting mix of NS power. I would say this video was shot 1995-96 as there are no wide cabs but the C40-9 was pretty common on trains at the time. A good mix of old and “newer” power for that time. The narration was well put together and very in formative. They followed the line from south to north as opposed to Pentrex that went North to south a few years earlier. Also have to give the videographer credit as he found excellent vantage points and angles. Defiantly an above average, professionally shot video.

I originally had this video for years on VHS and HAD to upgrade when it came out on DVD! I love the time period during which it was filmed (mid 1990s) as that is the time frame that I model. I love the overhead shots of trains as well as the ground shots right outside some of the tunnels! Seeing all of the fallen flag cars sans the graffiti that we have nowadays was also refreshing compared to what we see today. If love the Rathole I highly recommend this video, as well as the 2 by Pentrex: Through the Rathole Cab Ride and The Rathole (now offered as a combo)
