This is Needles to Barstow on the newly formed BNSF mainline. This ex-Santa Fe is one tough route, 30 miles of 1.4% From Needles to Goffs, rising over 2000 feet for westbounds and 40 miles of 1 % for eastbounds, plus the 25 mile drag up Ash Hill. This video was shot in February of 1996 and you’ll see the new SD75M along with a lot of older power including freshly painted GP30 and GP35 diesels. Join the newly formed BNSF on a trip across the Mojave desert on the Needles Subdivision.

  1. Dan

A nice snapshot of the early days of a merger that would change the face of American railroading. The Mojave is a favorite topic for railfan video producers, but this is a “right place at the right time” program — there are still plenty of locomotives wearing the colors of predecessor railroads Burlington Northern and Santa Fe, with some of our first glimpses of the newly merged BNSF. The videography is well done, with footage from all the great Mojave locations. Now that BNSF has been around for 25 years, this is a fine look back at its beginnings.

I enjoy seeing the trains in transition…… Santa Fe & Burlington Northern to the BNSF. All 3 are seen in this video which makes it interesting. Personal thoughts however are….. the Needles Sub. has been way over worked by railroad photographers and videographers so aside from the variety of power, there is not much really different to see otherwise.
