Here is a busy portion of the Overland Route, across the high plains of Wyoming, Colorado and Nebraska. This is the Sidney Sub, part of the UP’s famous original Overland Route. The sub runs from Cheyenne to North Platte and sees up to 50 trains a day. You’ll see a busy mainline with a mixture of Union Pacific hotshots, double stacks, grain trains, manifests and coal trains. Grain elevators decorate the landscape, and make an impressive background to the constant parade of trains.

The Great Plains region is starkly beautiful, and often the sight of a “prairie skyscraper” in the distance is the only reminder that the land is occupied by something other than the railroad. This program does a fine job capturing that feeling of vastness; it’s something that has changed little on the historic Overland Route. Videography and editing are well done, and you can almost feel the ground shake with the passing of long, heavy trains. A fine addition to any collection.

Personally, I like this video. It is great to see different locations in several states. The scenery is great in most cases. Lots of powerful units working hard. There is a question about the narrator’s knowledge of the regions he is in. Seems to get mistaken at times. So, that point alone… it does make the video a bit less interesting. For UP fans and people who like the regions covered… still a decent video.
