The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad ran their Steam Engine #1702 the full length of this 67 Mile, super scenic, North Carolina Short line, the old Southern Railway Murphy Branch. Pulling a special excursion for the Historic Spencer Shops, the colorful GSMR train ran from Dillsboro, through Bryson City, over Fontana Lake, along the recreation center at the spectacular Nantahala Gorge, up the steep 4.5% Topton Mountain grade, and straight through Andrews to Murphy.

Video Includes extensive trackside footage as well as Cab Rides, tender top views, and both auto and GP7 Pacing (Videography from the GP7, at times it ran just 200 feet ahead of the 1702). Believe it or not, we “talked”with the engine crew as we paced the 1702 from our car! You’ll see what we mean.

This is the far reaches of Western North Carolina. Care was taken to capture key points and numerous unique scenes. Great Railroading! Great Mountain scenery! Great Video!

This program covers the former US Army 2-8-0 makes a special trip. At Bryson City, the local fire department refills the tender. In the cab, the engineer during the Double A’s visit is none other than Grant Geist. Grant used to be a video producer by the name of Berkshire Productions from 1984’s Trolley Treasure or Little Engines that could, to his final video on the 1991 NRHS Convention. All of Geist’s videos minus the 3-part Contemporary Series in co-operation with Steve Neff have since been acquired by Yard Goat Images. During the ride from the top of the tender, the train picks up countless tree branches. Other obstacles that the GSMR encountered are some cows on the track. Beyond Mt. Topton, 1702 makes a whistle show as it arrived in Andrews. Here passengers can enjoy a musical concert while the crew removed 711 as they head for Murphy. During that run, the diesel is cautiously ahead of 1702 while a helicopter is also looking at the train from the sky. Another cameraman is on the diesel during some of the head on chase scenes, which includes the crew sweeping off branches on the tender.

On the return trip the next day, a little dog dashes across the track. After a stop in Andrews, 711 rejoins the consist for a trip to Mt. Topton. At Ferebee Park, a picnic lunch was made for the crew, some of the chasers, & the passengers. Back in Bryson city, 223 is making room for 1702 & 711’s arrival.

The late Trains Magazine Editor Jim Wrinn worked on this program.
