Witness the iron ore operations of the Great Northern from the mines and ore docks at Kelly Lake to Allouez, St. Paul, and Superior. Includes great views of GN’s N-3 class 2-8-8-0s in action. (45 minutes)
Volume 2: Diesel & Electric Power
View the diesel locomotives that were common to everyday use across the vast Great Northern system, as well as Northern Pacific and SP&S diesel power. GN’s mighty electrics are featured as well. (45 minutes)

Unfortunately there’s not a lot of video coverage on the Great Northern but this wonderful set fills in their past very well. Some great shots of their huge steamers and early diesels. The converge of ore operations was particularly interesting. I was surprised at the weathering on many of their steam locomotives. Should be a must have video in any true railfan/historians video library.

A nice tribute to a fallen flag that worked hard hauling ore and so much more. Love seeing the steam engines at work along with the early diesel covered wagons. History preserved for us to enjoy for years to come.

With Jim Knight’s outstanding narration, These trio of 45 minute videos on one more than 2 hour DVD, is an incredible companion to the other Classic Collector Series videos between 1988-1992. It’s a great tribute to these historic steam & early diesels on the GN with special appearances by some future famous survivors like Spokane Portland & Seattle 700 for example.
