Grande Island sits along the Platte River in the east central part of Nebraska. The Union Pacific and Chicago Burlington & Quincy crossed at grade on the city’s east side, and for many years this proved to be a busy intersection for train traffic. In 1995, a new Burlington Northern overpass over the Union Pacific main line was completed. Today, BNSF operates the ex-CB&Q line, while the U.P. continues its dominance on its Overland Route.
br>In this program, we begin by showing operations in Grande Island in 1979, when a tower controlled the diamond.
br>We then capture the action in May 2010. Union Pacific keeps its double track main line busy with all types of freight, while the BNSF hauls mostly Powder River Basin coal trains on its route from Alliance to Lincoln, Nebraska. You will enjoy the exciting new locomotive power as it makes its way along this historic hotspot. There’s never a dull moment, as several trains cross over and under each other simultaneously. Short line Nebraska Central is also captured as it operates the former U.P. branch line to Ord.
br>This location is very popular with rail fans all across the country and now you can be close to the action as you view over 90 trains in “Grande Island, Nebraska”!

The majority of this movie is shot from the Oak St crossing in Grand Island NE which isn’t a bad spot BUT there are several good spots around GI to get photos/videos of trains. I get why they stayed in this spot, for the crossover action, but at 2 hours of run time it gets a bit boring. BNSF and UP are the stars of the show with Nebraska Central making a brief appearance. Video is shot really well with good audio and narration with tidbits of history and info sprinkled in. Train symbols and destinations are also included. Shame the caboose and train viewing platform never came to be, would have made this spot even better.
